Phua is currently serving on the Artist-Mentor Scheme, an initiative helmed by the Singapore Teachers’ Academy for the aRTs (STAR) and supported by the National Arts Council (NAC) that aims to develop teachers’ competencies by engaging practitioners in specialised areas to co-teach in art, music, drama and dance to achieve curriculum goals. Mayflower Secondary was the first school to have engaged Phua to advise on curriculum pedagogy and how to infuse choral music into the classroom. Under this scheme, Phua was also selected to represent Singapore in the Coralua International Choral Festival, Norway in 2015. Most recently, the West Zone Primary School Music Teachers cluster has engaged Phua to be their artist-in-residence.
A passionate speaker and presenter, Phua was invited by Singapore’s local radio station Symphony 92.4FM to give a talk and performance on ‘Voice Types in Opera’ at the Young Musicians’ Society Auditorium in 2007. In November 2010, Phua gave a performance-talk entitled ‘Countertenors VS Castrati’ at the Singapore Institute of Management, and owing to its avid
reception, he has returned regularly since then to give the same workshop. 2011 also saw Phua hosting Singapore Lyric Opera’s annual concert ‘The Tales of Love and Death’ at the Esplanade concert hall. The topic ‘Countertenors VS Castrati’ proved to be so fascinating that Phua has given many a performance-talk on it, in schools such as Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) and Anglo-Chinese School (International). One of Phua’s career highlights occurred in September 2013, when he was invited by the Singapore Management University to share about his life as a countertenor for the inaugural prestigious Tedx conference.
