CONDUCTOR
Phua was previously a member of the illustrious Philharmonic Chamber Choir Singapore directed by Lim Yau, and while in it, he sang in the masterclasses of esteemed conductors such as Joseph Flummerfelt, Stephen Cleobury, and Chifuru Matsubara just to name a few.

For four years running, Phua had been invited by the Ministry of Education to conduct the Combined Schools choir for the annual Music-Elective Programme (MEP) Concert. Phua has also directed several exemplary choirs like the Singapore Lyric Opera Children’s Choir and the Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) Choir, and has coached many others including the Singapore Peranakan Association Choir, the Singapore Teachers’ Academy for the aRts (STAR) Choir, Fuhua Primary School Choir, Temasek Secondary School Choir and East Spring Chorale.

In 2017, with Phua at the helm, East Spring Chorale participated in the prestigious Limelight Series held at the Esplanade Concert Hall. 2017 also saw the ACS (Primary) choir collaborating with the SLO Children’s Choir to present the concert titled ‘Flight’ at the Victoria Concert Hall. The ACS (Barker Rd) choir is a regular participant of the annual Voices of Singapore Festival held at the Chijmes hall.

Phua’s keen interest in choral and a-cappella music has led him to explore music composition and his arrangements have been sung by vocal ensembles ranging from the National University of Singapore Buddhist Society to the local award-winning pop a-cappella group Upbeat.

Starting from 2018, Phua assumes the position of Vocal Instructor to the training choirs of the Singapore Symphony Children’s Choir (SSCC). He also serves on the Artist-Mentor Scheme, an initiative helmed by the Singapore Teachers’ Academy for the Arts and supported by the National Arts Council that engages outstanding practitioners to develop MOE teachers’ competencies in specialised areas such as music.
Phua is currently the choral director of:
