JADE BIRD - The Flight of the Jade Bird
Singapore Art Festival 2012

The Flight of the Jade Bird is a modern fable that links cultures, crossing dimensions between the material and the spiritual. It creates a dialogue among art forms, the spoken word, the sung text, the dance across meaning, the musical line and the harmonic universe that overarches our dissonant lives.

AUGUST MAN - Nella Fantasia
Choral director and Countertenor Phua Ee Kia moves beyond head voice

Even though he is a natural baritone, Phua Ee Kia, 31, sings as a countertenor. This sets him apart from other singers but comes with one big misconception. Phua explains that countertenors are not castrati: "Countertenors have not undergone any form of surgery to do what they can do; the vas deferens makes a vast difference!"

IMENEO BIRMINGHAM - Summer Festival Opera
Barber Institute, Birmingham University

Though the story-line is pretty inconsequential (wimpish girl rejecting the love of her life in favour of a chancer who rescued her, along with a shipload of other virgins, from a gang of pirates - and it takes her three acts to decide), the music of Handel's Imeneo has some wonderful moments.
